Getting Around the Park
Paved roads access a portion of Great Basin National Park, including the visitor centers, Lehman Caves, the Wheeler Peak Scenic Drive, and most of the campgrounds. Other areas, including the remainder of the park as well as Mount Moriah Wilderness, are accessible via graded and unmaintained dirt roads. Be prepared before venturing off paved roads. This is very remote country. Make certain your vehicle is well-maintained and carry extra water, food, clothing, a first aid kit, and a flashlight. Cell phone coverage is spotty.
Some remote roads require a four-wheel-drive vehicle. These roads may not be passable to any vehicle after wet weather or during the winter. Such roads are noted in the text. Check with Great Basin National Park or the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest for current back road conditions.
